Top 10 OMG Star Wars Moments

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a series of sci-fi action films were released. These

films defined a generation, becoming entrenched in pop culture and inspiring all of us to look to

the stars. Yes, we’re talking about Star Wars! The series returns to cinemas this December with

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and we’re celebrating the release by looking back at the most

awesome, the most jaw-dropping, and the totally OMG moments of the franchise. Catch Star

Wars Episode VII at the LDO Cinema from the 17th of December, and see whether the new film

can match the classics!

1. The Escape from Jabba’s Yacht – Return of the Jedi

‘In its belly, you will find a new definition of pain and suffering as you are slowly digested over a

thousand years…’ Luke, Leia, Lando, and Chewbacca have gotten Han Solo from his carbonite

tomb – only to get trapped on the sand hut of space mafia don Jabba the Hut. They’re surely

headed for certain death by being thrown into the Sarlaac in the Great Pit of Carkoon – well,

until Luke whips out his Jedi skills and Leia ends Jabba’s career rather abruptly by strangling

him with a giant chain.

2. Yoda and Count Dooku Fight – Attack of the Clones

Even if you hate the prequels, you have to admit this is a pretty cool scene. That little green

alien with the funny way of talking is finally allowed a fight scene, showing off just how much of

a Jedi Master Yoda is. Even Count Dooku, whose mastery of the dark side has beaten both

Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, can’t stand up against a 900 year old CGI character

with a lightsaber.

3. Order 66 – Revenge of the Sith

This is a pure OMG moment for sure in terms of how shocking and game changing this was.

There are plenty of sad moments in the Star Wars franchise, but nothing really compares to this.

The Emperor’s evil schemes finally come to fruition and the Jedi order is destroyed. The Jedi

leaders are killed in the midst of battle. Obi-Wan and Yoda are forced into hiding. And Anakin,

once the great hope of the Jedi order, kills quite a lot of children. Bit of a downer, really.

4. Obi-Wan Sacrifices Himself – A New Hope

Obi-Wan and Darth Vader, once Anakin Skywalker, reunite. On the Death Star. And not in a

good way. Obi-Wan confronts Vader, giving us all the very first lightsabre duel. It’s a little stiff,

but it’s a dynamic fight, full of the gravitas of age, vengeance, and inevitability – then Obi-Wan

makes the ultimate sacrifice, gets cut in half, and becomes one with the Force. It only makes

Vader more powerful though, so perhaps Obi-Wan should have stuck around a little longer.

5. The Lava Battle – Revenge of the Sith

The first confrontation between Anakin and Obi-Wan took place on an exploding volcano planet

– a far cry from their last battle. Anakin unleashes hell against his former master in the longest

lightsabre battle in the entire franchise. It’s also the single best lightsabre duel, and is the most

epic and heart-breaking action sequence in the series. Obi-wan is forced to beat his pupil and

then to mutilate him. And then watch him burn alive. Wait, are we sure that Anakin is the villain here?

6. The Cantina Bar – A New Hope

For so many of us, this scene was the first time we knew that Star Wars was something really

special. Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan visit this hive of scum and villainy, full of a huge variety of

eye-catching aliens, while the catchiest tune in the whole galaxy plays in the background. Luke

gets on the wrong side of a gentleman who just happens to have been charged with a death

sentence on 12 systems, Obi-Wan chops arms (we all know how much he likes to chop limbs

off), and we get to meet Han Solo and Chewbacca in a memorable confrontation with a certain

someone called Greedo.

7. Anakin Becomes Vader – Revenge of the Sith

After the intense fight with Obi-Wan where legs and arms were sent flying, Anakin is left burned

and broken. He can only survive encased in black life-support armour with robotic limbs and a

new mask to help him breathe – leading to the classic costume from the original trilogy. We see

the inside of Darth Vader’s mask as it’s attached to his face. Anakin takes a breath and the

transformation into Vader is complete… and then he screams out that ‘Noooooo!’, completely

blowing the moment.

8. Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Obi Wan Fight – The Phantom Menace

A three-way lightsaber battle. Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan battle the Sith Lord Darth Maul in

what is the best moment in the Phantom Menace (not that there are many good moments in that

film…). We get to see amazing lightsaber play and top-notch battle skills from a Jedi duo and a

Sith at the height of their powers – and Maul has a double-bladed lightsaber, an incredibly

badass weapon.

9. The Death Star Attack – A New Hope

Is there any sweeter moment than seeing the Death Star explode into a thousand tiny pieces?

This climatic battle aimed to emulate the feel of aerial dogfights from World War II movies, and

the clash between rebel and Imperial fighters is one of the most dynamic battles on screen –

then and now. Ships dive, circle, and strafe each other in a breathless 10 minute sequence that

sees Luke Skywalker beat the evil empire once and for all – at least until the sequel, as the

Emperor just orders another one to be built.

10. The Big Reveal – The Empire Strikes Back

Is there any better twist in the whole history of cinema? Following the incredible lightsaber duel

between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, the young Jedi tries to avenge his fallen mentor only

for Vader to shock audiences completely – Luke learns of Obi-Wan’s deception and that Vader

is his father. No wonder that Luke threw himself off that bridge. Anyone would feel a little
